[NOTE: Recently I wrote a little blog entry over on Stereomatic, addressing the notion of directionality in cables, based on my limited knowledge and my desire to run my mouth off like a good Italian boy. I've re-written it here, with some further clarifying ideas added. I hope you enjoy it, and would love to hear any feedback you might have. I'll post this also as a blog entry to the site.]

So … I’ve been asked the question about the « directionality » of my cables ever since I’ve been designing and manufacturing cable for the audio industry. There persists this notion that somehow signal cables (interconnects, speaker cables, digital cables) are « directional. »

For those of you who don’t understand this bit of Hi Fi vernacular, I’ll explain it like this: Your speaker cable has two ends to it – the end that will get connected to your amplifier, and the end that will get connected to your speaker.

Imagine that you have them hooked up, and then you mark the amplifier-end of the cable with an « A » and the loudspeaker end of the cable with a « B » – so that you have identified an orientation of that cable. Now, reverse the ends so that the « A » end is connected to the loudspeaker, and vice versa.

One can hear a slight difference or change in the quality of sound when this reversal is performed, and some people claim that this difference, prima fascie, is sufficient evidence to prove that the speaker cable itself must be more efficient (or somehow otherwise « better ») when oriented in one direction vs. the other.

Some industry folks have even theorized that the crystals in the metal wire’s lattice are somehow diodic (a diode is like a one-way valve, permitting signal to travel in one direction but not in the other), and the orientation of these crystals within the wire will determine the appropriate « direction » to orient your speaker cable.

Therefore: I would like to address the notion of directionality in a signal cable as regards a better or worse orientation for a cable.

I believe that this notion doesn’t comport with the generally accepted working model of alternating current. That is to say: I think « directionality, » as it is used to infer some manner of diodicity in cable, is tantamount to « magical thinking » – attributing an observation to an impossible cause.

My Argument :

The signals traveling through a cable are alternating current (AC) which simply means that the « direction » of the signal changes for every half of every cycle of every frequency.

An AC signal is not analogous to water being pushed down a hose, from one end to the other. Rather, an AC signal travels in one direction toward the speaker for the positive-phase of the waveform, and then travels toward the amplifier for the negative-phase of the waveform.

Half the time it’s headed to the speaker, half the time it’s headed to the amplifier.
Back and forth, like a piston … and if you have ever seen a woofer move back and forth like a piston you not only have a visual and mechanical analogy of what is happening electrically within the cable, you have the direct effect and evidence of it.

So … if the signal is working back and forth between amplifier and speaker much the way a piston moves up and down or a woofer moves in and out, what does this mean to the issue of directionality?

It simply means that if a cable is « directional » at all, and that directionality could somehow mess up the signal, no matter how you orient that cable – 1/2 of your signal will always be messed up: either the negative half of the waveform or the positive half of the waveform.
So if you’re reorienting your cable for directionality, you’d simply be choosing which half to deform without ever knowing which half you’ve chosen (because we cannot inspect and confirm the directionality or « diodicity » of metal crystals in a cable).

What all this means is that your speaker cables, interconnects, digital cables … are either not actually « directional, » or if they were, you wouldn’t be able to tell because no matter how you oriented the cable, they would always be affecting/deforming one half of every waveform within the overall signal.
So the notion of directionality in audio cables is untestable, unfalsifiable, and therefore meaningless to the responsible observer.

« But! » you say … « I have heard it with my own ears! » – I have too (or at least I’ve heard something). I have reoriented wires and heard small differences. After a long while, I have also re-reoriented them and heard differences once again. Better? Worse? Hard to say. At least different.
There are any number of possibilities at work here, but I doubt sincerely that any of them are of a « directional » or « diodic » nature, given the behavior of alternating current as we understand and use it.

As well, if you think about it: In industries where something like the potential directionality of a signal cable would be literally life-or-death critical, there is no concern for any manner of « diodicity » in cables. I’m talking here about the millimeter-wave communications industries that inform and supply military, aerospace, and surveillance activities (from which we not only derive some of our cable technology, but from which we also subcontract some of our cable manufacturing).

If there were any industry or activity that would benefit most from this otherwise arcane and esoteric knowledge of wire directionality, it would be the industry and activities surrounding signal transfer in military, aerospace, and surveillance disciplines.

All of this to say that, in my own opinion, the idea that wires are actually directional seems to be bunkum, and the idea doesn’t seem to stand up to the light of mild scrutiny.

So the next time you buy a cable with arrows marked on it, or the next time someone tells you « we listen for directionality of our cables before marking them with pretty arrows, » … think about what I’ve told you here and ask yourself whether or not those arrows and the associated claims are just marketing words and concepts aimed at convincing you of something magical that probably isn’t true, because it probably can’t be true.

CHATSWORTH, CA

– Connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced the availability of its new 8×8 CrossPoint Matrix for HDMI v1.3. This matrix switcher enables direct connections between high definition sources and displays without networking.

Eight Blu-ray players, gaming systems or set-top boxes using the HDMI format can be switched to any eight displays with the 8×8 CrossPoint Matrix for HDMI v1.3. High definition resolutions up to 1080p full HD are delivered instantly when selected. Plug and play operation and support for the expanded HDMI v1.3 format, including deep color as well as Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio make this a useful addition to any environment using consumer equipment.

“This matrix requires no networking, and gives direct access to any eight hi-def sources from one or more hi-def displays,” said Hagai Gefen, president and CEO, Gefen Inc. “It is a true matrix, allowing any source to be viewed on one or all eight displays.”

Installation is simple, requiring the connection of eight hi-def sources to the eight HDMI inputs, and the connection of eight hi-def displays to the eight HDMI outputs. Users can assign any source to any display, relaying hi-def video with HDCP compliance and multi-channel audio with no signal delays.

The 8×8 Cross Point Matrix for HDMI v1.3 offers local front panel control, IR remote access and RS-232 compatibility. It comes with an external power supply, eight HDMI cables and rack ears for mounting.

A new product from Naim Audio. Canadian suggested retail price will be 2,200$, availability April 2010.

- performance with desirability

CES Show Las Vegas; Naim Audio the UK’s largest and most successful specialist audio manufacturer launches UnitiQute a smaller more compact all-in-one system than NaimUniti Naim Audio’s multi award-winning system.

Naim developed UnitiQute recognising a new breed of consumers – those who want the performance and the convenience that new technology brings but will not accept the compromise in performance that following this route from a non-audiophile brand might entail.

The UnitiQute is the first high-end remote controlled all-in-one audio player to offer so many sources: FM & Internet Radio (plus DAB in supporting markets), MP3 / iPod (Authenticated digital iPod connection), Streamed audio and USB. Key to UnitiQute is its digital audio streaming capabilities.

UnitiQute can wirelessly stream music stored on UPnP™ networked devices, providing access to even more music including – the increasingly popular – hi-resolution 24bit / 96kHz WAV or FLAC files. With its onboard 24bit / 192kHz capable DAC, UnitiQute is the ultimate audio source hub, able to interface with digital audio sources, such as computers and gaming consoles and the latest TVs.

UnitiQute combines proven and multi-award winning analogue engineering as it is derived from Naim’s top selling and again multi-award winning, NAIT 5i integrated amplifier with state-of- the-art up–to-the-minute digital engineering to deliver the sonic performance to make the most discriminating customer proud.

The large linear power supply designed for UnitiQute ensures that it can deliver the necessary goods even at party levels.
The industrial design reflects the company’s belief in understatement and elegance.
The design however is not just cosmetic: the choice of non-magnetic materials — to reduce eddy currents significantly — and the fit and finish are all added extras in the performance.

UnitiQute will be available worldwide in March.

Feature summary

A complete audio system – just add speakers

About Naim
Naim has a passionate and committed interest in music. This is as true today as it was at the time of the company’s formation in Salisbury, England, over 35 years ago. Enjoyment of music has driven Naim to design and manufacture the finest range of audio equipment available.

Top engineering principles ensure that all Naim products meet and exceed the measurable parameters essential for state-of-the-art performance, safety and reliability: all essential qualities for which Naim is renowned. Measurement alone, however, is not enough: every product must also deliver the emotion of music.
This is what makes good hi-fi great hi-fi.

Naim quality requires an attention to detail verging on the obsessive: a special and unique approach to component selection and system design, all within a highly specialised production environment. Every aspect of a Naim product’s design is considered for its impact on sound quality.

Naim’s toughest critics are its management and its employees. Together with customers – music lovers and numerous musicians, who regard Naim’s products as the closest to live music – Naim push onward on a path of continuous improvement.

Naim does not chase market fashion and will not move from its overriding objective of achieving consistent musical performance. The company has its own record label, the Naim Label, which specialises in high-quality music recordings. Naim has moved steadily into the world of Audio Video and Multi-Room, introducing the award-winning n-Vi CD/DVD all-in-one player and a range of multi-room audio products: NaimNet, designed to bring new customers to the Naim fold without sacrificing Naim’s legendary performance. Naim also announced an exclusive partnership with Bentley Motors in 2008, with the launch of the Naim for Bentley Premium Audio System, which is available across all Bentley models.

Will we all watch 3D TV in the future, or will it remain a niche product meant for science fiction movies, video games, or special sporting events?
As we’ve seen with the breakout success of the movie Avatar, there is definitely consumer willingness to enjoy 3D at the movies. But, it is still an open question whether consumers will buy a 3D experience for the home. Here are ten reasons why in-home 3D TV may never achieve mass market appeal.

Glasses
Need I say more. Who wants to buy them, keep track of them, or even wear them? Are you eager to wear geeky 3D glasses and sit silently in front of a TV in a darkened room every night?

TV Watching is Social
Home TV watching is in many ways a social experience. You watch with your family or friends with the lights on. You may talk about the show or something else. Multitaskers may even be on the Internet, chatting, tweeting or texting from their phone. 3D viewing abruptly alters the social nature of TV watching.

Compatibility
Think the brand new flat panel TV you bought recently will show 3D? Think again. You will need to upgrade just about everything including the cables.

Lack of content
Even if you are fortunate enough to buy a 3D TV when they first come out, along with a 3D Blu-ray player, you won’t have much to watch. Even if you could watch more, what do you really have to watch in 3D?

Confusion
3D adds a new layer of complexity to the already complicated TV, satellite/cable, dvd player hook-up process. New technical 3D jargon will further confuse consumers. There are currently different ways to capture and displa y 3D, which can require different types of glasses and/or equipment. Confused yet? So am I.

Health risks
3D viewing can induce headaches, disorientation, nausea, or eye-strain for some people. 3D tricks the brain and puts your eyes through a serious workout. Nobody knows yet, since there have been no major studies what, if any, long-term effects extensive 3D watching may cause.

Unwatchable 3D Footage
3D video is unwatchable without special glasses. If you were told right now your TV would only work if you wore special glasses, how many of those TVs do you think would sell? Admittedly that is an untrue example, but it’s still the same question consumers will answer with their purse strings.

Just Good-enough Syndrome
This is not a disease, but many peopl e are quite happy with their new flat panel TV purchase of recent years. At the same time everything is not yet broadcast in full HD and the majority are still happy with regular DVD quality. Even the blu-ray market has yet to take off. Convincing consumers to adopt a new format may be a tough sell.

Discs are dying
No funerals please. With improved streaming capabilities and greater digital home storage, inevitably discs (cd, dvd and blu-ray) will be replaced with on-demand streaming. It may take another decade, but how we consume media will likely not include discs. This isn’t necessarily bad for 3D, but it takes 2-4 times more storage and greater download speeds to stream 3D. Bandwidth limitations are likely to be an issue.

History Lessons
Bringing sweeping change to home TV watching takes time, a very long time. It took HDTV about 20 years to achieve market dominance with the help of a government mandate. For better or worse, I don’t expect government involvement this time. The electronics and entertainment industries will have their work cut out for them.

They are in a different league and how can that be ?

We did very different in x-over designs and took more cost into our designs.
Took the very best of Duelund Coherent audio designs and AudioTechnology and just took the very « un cost and the best » in to the peak designs. Did it all god !!

Peak Consult made the ultimate cabinets design and x-over design, all in Acrylic finishes with the attachment of real wood and took it to it’s own State of Art.

AudioTechnology:

« Audio technology are proud to present our two new drivers with the lightweight, ultra stiff sandwich cones.
The cones consist of two thin layers of carbon reinforced paper cones with a special resonance damping foam between.

The cones are 2 mm thick, but weigh nearly the same as our P cones.
They are coated with a thin ultraviolet protection coating, to avoid discolouring of the cones.

They are extremely stiff and play without break-ups in the recommended frequency area.
KA system is also integrated in the drivers, presenting deep, uncoloured rich bass – even at low levels.
The sound is fast, dry and undistorted.

Thanks to the KA system, you are able to “feel” the strings of the double bass, even at low levels. Drums are presented with an unusual impact – just the way we like it. »

Duelund Coherent Audio:

In a world defined by me-too products and the comfortable numbness of the status quo, few aspire to the truly great.
When new developments heralded as the second coming scarcely amount to more than a new lick of paint, what is needed is a no holds barred attitude towards research and development combined with optimum levels of execution in all areas.

Duelund Coherent Audio products fulfil this statement of intent and go one better by incorporating the best of classic and sound engineering principles combined with radical thinking and the refusal of conformity.

Crossover components

Why accept components in your audio system far more suited for life inside a computer. With the Duelund range of crossover components you don’t have to.
All are made from natural materials with the emphasis solely on your musical enjoyment.
From time to time, we get the question if a Duelund capacitor is simply a re-branded Jensen capacitor, as is so often seen in the industry.

The short answer is « absolutely not! », whereas the more detailed response is that we do collaborate with Jensen Capacitors, but the products themselves have nothing in common with a standard Jensen capacitor besides being a « wet » capacitor.

Peak Consult

Did something that no other company would try and could afford on the line in normal production.

Proud to be the last boy scout in Hi-Fi

Kicks off 2010 with a new name, website, media gallery,
20th Anniversary event and more.

LAS VEGAS, NV, Jan. 27, 2010

– The International Digital Media Alliance (IDMA) today announced a number of firsts, including the finalization of the alliance’s name change from DVDA (DVD Association) to IDMA.

While the DVDA has been a proud fixture on the digital media scene since its name was first adopted in 2000, the IDMA name better reflects the alliance’s efforts in expanding its mission to promote best practices and excellence in the entire digital media market, rather than limiting the organization to just the DVD market.

In conjunction with the name change, IDMA has also established its new, final URL www.TheIDMA.org.

The new website will feature a number of innovative developments including the IDMA Preferred Provider Network, which will serve as a directory of IDMA-approved vendors in the areas of compression, authoring, programming, QC, tools, media supplies, and other digital media related goods and services.

The new site will also house the IDMA Digital Media Gallery, which will feature a video gallery for IDMA members to upload and display their digital media trailers or demo reels in high quality. As an added value to members, IDMA is finalizing a transaction engine that will allow for the sale and full-length delivery of videos previewed from trailers which have been uploaded by members.

This will provide all IDMA members with a store front presence for their digital content.
Furthering the goal to educate both the industry it serves as well as its consumers, IDMA has also begun work on the IDMA MediaPedia; a comprehensive online encyclopedia listing important digital media facts and information that will allow easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages by IDMA members.

In celebration of IDMA’s 20 years of service to the digital industry, IDMA also announces its 20th anniversary Excellence Awards event, “Twenty Years of Excellence,” will be held in May, 2010 in the Los Angeles area.

The event will feature a host of important technology presentations on the subjects of publishing digital media in all its forms, and will include tabletop demos from the association’s many technology partners, IDMA members, and special sponsors.

It will also provide a special session with all of the CDIA, DVDA, and IDMA executives who have presided over the association, recalling its growth from humble beginnings to the association’s present form. It will also include special 20th anniversary Excellence Awards, recognizing important landmarks in digital media over the past 20 years.

“2010 marks an important milestone in the life of the IDMA,” said Bruce Nazarian, IDMA President. “While we have been associated with optical disc media our entire life, the IDMA has expanded its mission to include digital media in all forms, both on-disc and off.

We anticipate another 20 years of service to the media industry, promoting best practices and excellence in digital media production.”
